Michael Thompson, originally from West Virginia, completed his undergradate degree in biology at Washington University in St. Louis in 2003. He subsequently spent a year at the National Institutes of Health studying endothelial progenitor cells in cardiovascular disease under the mentorship of Dr. Richard O. Cannon, III. He then entered the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh where he completed his graduate studies in the laboratory of Dr. Satdarshan (Paul) Monga. For his thesis research, he studied the role of the Wnt/Beta-catenin signaling pathway in liver cancer and cholestatic liver disease. Following completion of the MD/PhD program, Michael joined the Pediatrics residency program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital where he also completed fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology. In 2017, Michael joined the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University where he now studies developmental programming of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Izzy O’Shaughnessy grew up in Westchester, New York. She is currently an undergraduate student majoring in biology and minoring in Spanish at Washington University in St. Louis. Outside of school, she spends time volunteering at health clinics and getting involved in public health projects. In her free time, she enjoys reading, going on runs through Forest Park, and learning to play the guitar.

Min Woo Kwon
Undergraduate researcher
Min Woo Kwon is originally from South Korea, and he has spent most of his life growing up in Orange County, California. He is currently an undergraduate student majoring in biology at Washington University in St. Louis and has other interests including anthropology and public health. He joined the Thompson lab in 2021 and is currently learning about the effects of maternal exercise on the liver health of offspring and the vertical transmission of gut microbiota. In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and piano, and he spends a lot of his time following professional soccer. Outside of school, he also spends a lot of his time doing volunteer work as a tutor that teaches students ranging from elementary school students to adults.
